Set up Internal and External Transfers

Conveniently move money to and from eligible accounts, including your accounts at other banks, using City National Online® or the City National Bank App®.

Before you can initiate an internal transfer between your eligible City National Bank accounts, please reach out to your Relationship Manager to set up your ability to make internal transfers. Internal transfers are credited the same day if completed by 10:00 p.m. (PT) / 1:00 a.m. (ET).

Before initiating external transfers to or from accounts that aren’t held at City National Bank, you’ll need to verify test transactions to ensure connectivity between the accounts.

Transfer limits

There is no transaction limit for internal transfers other than the available account balance. The external transfer dollar limit is $25,000 – either for all transfers made in a day or as a single transfer.

To increase your external transfer limit over $25,000, please contact your Relationship Manager.


Internal and external transfers from a web browser

Types of personal accounts that you can transfer between:

  • Demand Deposit Accounts (DDAs)
  • Interest Checking Accounts
  • Money Market Accounts (MMAs)
  • Savings Accounts

To get started with an internal or external transfer, please sign in to City National Online and complete the following steps:

  1. On the Account Summary screen, select Transfers, then Make a Transfer.
  2. Select Send From and Send To accounts from the drop downs.
    • NOTE: Select two City National accounts to do an internal transfer, or select a City National account and an external account to make a transfer to or from an external account.  
  3. Enter the transfer Amount and select a Transfer Date. 
    • To make a recurring transfer, select the toggle switch labeled Recurring and enter the details of your recurring transfer.
  4. Select Next to review your transfer details, then select Submit.
    • Need to change something? Select Make Changes to return to the transfer form and make changes.

Transfers made before 4:00 p.m. (PT) / 7:00 p.m. (ET) on a business day will be processed immediately and posted to the external account within two business days. External transfer requests received after this time, or on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays will be processed on the next business day.


Transfer money on the City National Bank App

  1. From the bottom of the screen, select Move Money, then Make Account Transfers.
  2. Choose the funding account and the receiving account.
  3. Enter the amount of your transfer.
  4. If this is an external transfer, select a date (up to two years in advance) to send the transfer.
  5. Slide the control to the right to process your transfer.
 



All transfers are subject to available funds.

To request the option to make transfers to and from your accounts, go to Customer Service and select "Contact us". In your instructions, please include the full account numbers as well as the exact direction of the transfer relationship: to, from, or if requesting transfers both ways.

To change a scheduled transfer, please ensure that you make the change prior to 10:00 p.m. PT the night before the date of the transfer.

For a loan or line of credit account, if you make an additional payment, your payment may be applied to the current amount due, to unpaid interest and then to principal, held in suspense for application to a future scheduled payment, to your next scheduled payment or to the principal balance of your loan or line, depending upon the type of loan or line you have. If you wish to make a payment to reduce principal, please contact your City National Banker at (800) 773-7100, option zero.

A transfer you schedule for today in a repeating transfer series will be processed the next business day. Remaining transfers in the series will be processed according to the schedule you specify. If you want a transfer processed today, use the one-time transfer feature.

City National Bank App requires that you download the City National Bank App and is only available for select mobile devices. Requires setup in City National Online. Data connection required. Message and data rates may apply.
